10271 Fiat 500 is a Creator Expert set that was released on March 1, 2020.

Background

The Fiat 500 is a rear-engined, four-seat, small city car that was manufactured and marketed by Fiat Automobiles from 1957 to 1975 over a single generation in two-door saloon and two-door station wagon bodystyles.

Launched as the Nuova (new) 500 in July 1957 as a successor to the 500 "Topolino", it was an inexpensive and practical small car. Measuring 2.97 metres (9 feet 9 inches) long, and originally powered by a 479 cc two-cylinder, air-cooled engine, the 500 was 24.5 centimetres (9.6 inches) smaller than Fiat's 600, launched two years earlier, and is considered one of the first purpose-designed city cars. In 2007, the 50th anniversary of the Nuova 500's launch, Fiat launched another new 500, stylistically inspired by the 1957 Nuova 500, featuring a front-mounted engine and front-wheel drive.

Despite its very small size, the 500 proved to be an enormously practical vehicle with large sales throughout Europe. Besides the two-door coupé, it was also available as the "Giardiniera" estate; this variant featured the standard engine laid on its side, the wheelbase lengthened by 10 cm (3.9 in) to provide a more convenient rear seat, a full-length sunroof, and larger brakes from the Fiat 600. Production of the 500 ended in 1975, although its replacement, the Fiat 126, was launched two years earlier. The 126 was not as successful as its predecessor in Italy, but sold well in the Eastern Bloc countries, being assembled and manufactured in Poland as a Polski Fiat. The Fiat 500 has a Cx (aerodynamic resistance coefficient) of 0,38, a very good performance for its time.

Description

The set employs 2x4 plates with TECHNIC pins as the floor of the car, which is suspended between Technic bricks. Nearly 400 bright light yellow elements are included, many of which are brand new in this color. The 1x2 rounded plates are used to accommodate the angled bodywork panels. Several tiny elements form the engine and the rear bumper is securely connected using clips and a 2x6 plate with studs on the side. The bodywork towards the back is assembled in two layers, replicating the band that appears on the original vehicle.  Several 1x2 jumper plates and 1x2 grille tiles are distributed across the floor at this stage, beginning assembly of the interior. Medium nougat arms with Technic pins connect each seat to the floor while curved slopes and tiles create the upholstery. The doors are designed using click hinges, enabling curved slopes to be fixed sideways and matching the rear bodywork. Additional angled wheel arches are fitted above the forward axle, incorporating hinge plates. The rounded headlights assist in disguising the transition between the front section and both wheel arches. The windscreen and roof share certain similarities with 10262 James Bond Aston Martin DB5 as 1x1 clips provide secure connections at each corner. They are notably important here as the roof is rather hollow, providing sufficient room for the fabric sun roof. The sun roof is simple, connecting with two dark bluish grey ball joints and a black 6L bar. Finally, the engine cover and wheels are fitted before constructing the artistic accessories.
