Background[]
The Lord of the Rings[]
Barud-dûr (literally “the Dark Tower”) was the fortress of the Dark Lord Sauron in the land of Mordor. From here Sauron, in the form of a great fiery eye, looked out over Middle-earth and directed his forces in his campaign of domination. It was here that Gollum was brought and tortured for information about the One Ring before either escaping or being allowed to escape in order to seek it. Barud-dûr was visible to Frodo Baggins and Samwise Gamgee at various points of their journey to Mount Doom, and to the Host of the West from the Black Gate as they fought there. When the One Ring was destroyed, Barud-dûr collapsed in the ensuing destruction of Mordor.
