21312 Women of NASA is the 19th LEGO Ideas set that was released in November 1, 2017, containing three builds and four minifigures, showing famous women who have worked for the US space agency, NASA.
Details[]
Margaret Hamilton[]
The first build shows the computer scientist Margaret Hamilton standing beside a print-out of the navigation software that she and her team produced for the Apollo project in 1969. This replicates the famous photo,[1] including the markings on the blackboard and the coatstand behind her.
Mae Jemison and Sally Ride[]
The second build displays a US Space Shuttle along with two astronauts: Sally Ride who flew aboard the Challenger to become the first American woman in space in 1983; and Mae Jemison, the first woman of colour (of any nationality) in space, launching in 1992 aboard the Endeavour.
The shuttle can be easily removed from the base. It comes complete with the side rocket boosters and main engines (not easily visible in the box image), which can be easily removed just like the real shuttle during its ascent into space.
Nancy G. Roman[]
The third build features Nancy G. Roman, the first woman in an executive position at NASA, and known as the "Mother of Hubble" for her work in planning the Hubble Space Telescope. She is featured beside an image of a nebula, and a poseable model of the Hubble Space Telescope.
Background[]
This set is based on real people who have worked with the US space agency NASA. The Space Shuttle was used in over 100 missions into space between 1981 and 2011. The Hubble Space Telescope was launched in 1990 and is still in use today thanks to a number of maintenance missions.
