4215473 Die Suche nach dem Goldenen Drachen (The Search for the Golden Dragon) is a German Adventurers Orient Expedition Audio Drama released in 2003. It was available as a free promotional item when purchasing Orient Expedition sets at the German toy story Vedes.[1]
Plot[]
Chapter 1[]
The story begins in June 1925. At Dr. Kilroy's office in the London Museum, he receives an envelope from Dr. Giovanni containing a silk cloth with ancient Chinese text, which had been found at Marco Polo's residence in Venice. Upon translating the text, Kilroy calls Johnny Thunder and tells him about his discovery: the text is a poem that alludes to Marco Polo's treasures. They go to Pippin Reed's house and invite her on their trip to Venice.
Chapter 2[]
Johnny Thunder, Dr. Kilroy, Pippin Reed, and Dr. Giovanni go to Marco Polo's house. Kilroy lies to Giovanni, claiming that they are searching for Marco Polo's diary. Johnny searches the house and finds a framed map on silk cloth, which combines with the other silk cloth to form a map to India. With the full map and poem now legible, Kilroy is able to read the rest of Marco Polo's message, instructing the adventurers to seek three treasures across Asia to retrieve the Golden Dragon from Kublai Khan's palace.
While the adventurers depart Marco Polo's house, Dr. Giovanni secretly reports to Lord Sam Sinister in a nearby dark yard. Giovanni tells Lord Sinister about Marco Polo's treasure, and Sinister pays him for his service.
Chapter 3[]
Weeks later, the adventurers arrive in India, where locals warn them about the dangerous jungle and the strict Maharaja. While exploring the jungle, the adventurers see Babloo and Pampa accosted by the Maharaja, his guards, and Lord Sam Sinister. They realize that Dr. Giovanni must have informed Lord Sinister, who allied with the Maharaja.
The Maharaja demands that Babloo hand over the sunstone, which is needed by his village. Johnny rescues Babloo and Pampa. Dr. Kilroy asks Babloo about "the sting of the jungle", which Babloo suggests to be the Scorpion Palace.
Chapter 4[]
Babloo offers to help the adventurers in exchange for their help in retrieving the sunstone, which is said to bring good weather and harvest. However, the sunstone is guarded by Tygurah in service of the gods. Babloo calls his elephants Giri and Chaiku. While Babloo and Pippin Reed ride Giri to the Scorpion Palace, Johnny Thunder and Dr. Kilroy ride Chaiku to the sunstone's location.
As night falls, Johnny Thunder and Dr. Kilroy begin setting up camp. Kilroy looks for firewood but gets lost. After hearing a roar, he finds a footbridge leading to an Indian altar where the sunstone is kept. Kilroy retrieves the sunstone but is attacked by Tygurah. He escapes across the collapsing footbridge and runs until he finds Johnny.
Chapter 5[]
Babloo, Pippin Reed, and Giri are pursued by Lord Sam Sinister's car en route to the Scorpion Palace. Giri picks up a tree and throws it in the road, blocking Sinister's path. At night, they make camp, and Pippin asks Babloo about the Maharaja's tyrannical rule. She is briefly scared by Juti, a curious snake.
The next morning, Babloo and Pippin Reed meet up with Johnny Thunder and Dr. Kilroy outside the Scorpion Palace. Babloo is given the sunstone. The adventurers approach the palace and are quickly captured by Lord Sam Sinister, the Maharaja, and his royal guards. Lord Sinister instructs Johnny to be his forward scout, solving riddles and disarming traps so that Sinister can safely retrieve the treasure. Johnny exploits Sinister's ego by tricking him into moving the claws of a giant scorpion idol, triggering a rolling boulder. The boulder breaks a large hole in the palace, allowing Babloo and Giri to enter. With Chaiku and the rest of the elephant herd outside, the Maharaja and his royal guards are forced to surrender.
The treasure chest guarded by the scorpion idol only contains jewels, but Dr. Kilroy notices light shining through a trapdoor in the ceiling. They find the Golden Shield and another piece of the map, leading to the Himalayas. However, Lord Sam Sinister eavesdrops on them and learns this information. The adventurers say goodbye to Babloo before departing.
Chapter 6[]
Months later, the adventurers arrive at a monastery in Tibet and discuss the next part of Marco Polo's riddle. A monk introduces them to their guide, Sherpa Sangye Dorje. They ask Sangye about a place of worship, but Sangye warns them about the snowy weather and the Yeti. Sangye also reveals that Lord Sam Sinister had already visited the monastery and asked the same questions; deciding that it is important to stop such an evil man, he agrees to guide them to the Temple of Mount Everest despite the danger. They fly Johnny Thunder's Aero Nomad until it becomes impossible to steer the hot air balloon any further.
Chapter 7[]
Sangye Dorje points out Yeti footprints, and Pippin Reed takes a photograph. Later, Pippin spots an ice altar, but when she opens the altar's drawer, the Yeti emerges from its cave and is angry at having been awoken. Pippin quickly uses her camera flash to frighten and blind the Yeti, which knocks itself unconscious. Since the Yeti is considered sacred to the mountain people, the adventurers bandage its head before moving on. After three more days of travel, they approach the Temple of Mount Everest. They cross the rope bridge, which collapses under their weight.
Chapter 8[]
The adventurers enter the Temple of Mount Everest and dodge a swinging axe trap. They are confronted by Lord Sam Sinister, who takes advantage of the disarmed traps to grab a ruby from a statue. However, a hatch catapults Sinister out of the temple, and he drops the ruby. Outside the temple, they find a hole marked with "M". Inserting the ruby reveals the Golden Sword and the third map, leading to the Chinese city of Xi'an.
Chapter 9[]
After passing the Great Wall of China, the adventurers arrive in Xi'an. The beggar Jing Lee asks food for her sickly father. In exchange, Jing tells them about that Kublai Khan's former pagoda is now known as the Dragon Fortress and is the residence of Emperor Chang Wu, a ruthless mandarin who controls Xi'an. Jing leads them to a lake, where they see Lord Sam Sinister with Dragon Fortress Guards. Jing talks to the fisherman Wong, who helps them cross the lake.
Chapter 10[]
Upon arriving at the Dragon Fortress, Johnny Thunder and Jing Lee tackle the guards, but the adventurers are quickly captured by a dozen more guards, Emperor Chang Wu, and Lord Sam Sinister, who has already retrieved the Golden Helmet. They are escorted into the throne room, where Lord Sinister forces them to hand over the Golden Shield and Golden Sword.
Before Chang Wu's guards can escort them to the dungeon, Jing Lee whistles loudly. This signals Wong and other Chinese rebels to storm the Dragon Fortress. During the ensuing battle, Lord Sam Sinister takes the golden treasures and sneaks into a secret chamber. In the end, Chang Wu and his guards are overthrown by the rebels.
The adventurers find Lord Sam Sinister in a dark corridor. While Lord Sinister is distracted by a treasure chest, the adventurers take note of a painting resembling an oriental gate with a stone lion maw. Lord Sinister reaches into the stone lion maw and pulls a rope, causing the gate to open like a spinning door.
Chapter 11[]
The passage reveals a Dragon Fortress Statue and a lever. Ignoring the adventurers' warnings, Lord Sam Sinister pulls the lever, and the statue comes to life and scares him away. Since Lord Sinister drops the golden treasures, Johnny Thunder gets the idea to swap the statue's armor and weapons with the golden treasures. When they pull the lever again, the statue hands them the Golden Keys on its belt. When the keys are inserted into two locks, a domed chamber is revealed, containing the Golden Dragon. Although Dr. Kilroy thinks their adventure is over, Johnny points out that they still need to bring the Golden Dragon back to London. As its eyes glow, the narrator speculates that the Golden Dragon is alive.
Differences from the comics[]
Overall, Die Suche nach dem Goldenen Drachen follows the same plot and storyline as the online Orient Expedition comics. A number of scenes are expanded upon, while others are abridged. However, there are a few other notable differences:
- Dr. Giovanni, Chaiku, Juti, and Wong are original characters from the audio drama that do not appear in the toyline or the comics.
- Although this is never stated in any comics or other media, LEGO.com FAQ stated that the Orient Expedition theme takes place in 1933.[2] In the audio drama, the storyline takes place in 1925 instead.
- In the comics, Dr. Kilroy meets Johnny Thunder and Pippin Reed in-person at Venice before telling them about the poem. In the audio drama, he calls Johnny first and tells him about the poem over the phone, then they get Pippin together while still in London, all before heading to Venice.
- In the comics, the footbridge collapses when Tygurah tries to chase Dr. Kilroy, and Tygurah falls through. In the audio drama, the footbridge collapses when Dr. Kilroy tries to escape Tygurah, who vanishes afterward.
- In the comics, Johnny Thunder and Dr. Kilroy ride the Elephant Caravan to the Scorpion Palace with Pippin Reed and Babloo. In the audio drama, only Pippin and Babloo are present during this scene, more closely matching the set.
- In the comics, Lord Sinister attacks the Aero Nomad in his bi-plane; later, Lord Sinister and Ngan Pa capture the adventurers after the Yeti encounter. In the audio drama, Lord Sinister does not appear in the Tibet arc until the Temple of Mount Everest, and Ngan Pa does not appear in any capacity.
- In the comics, the Yeti runs away after Pippin Reed uses her camera flash. In the audio drama, it knocks itself unconscious and then needs to be bandaged by the adventurers.
- In the comics, the adventurers are captured by Chang Wu's guards at the Great Wall of China, and they sabotage the adventurers' half-track. In the audio drama, there are no guards at the Great Wall of China, so the adventurers explore Xi'an on foot because the city is too crowded to drive through.
- Jun-Chi is not a living being in the audio drama. Therefore, its role in scaring off Chang Wu's guards is given to Wong and the rebels instead.
- In the comics, Emperor Chang Wu and his guards remain an active threat after the adventurers retrieve the Golden Dragon. In the audio drama, they are defeated by Jing Lee's rebels before the Golden Dragon is discovered.
- In the comics, the Passage of Jun-Chi is used as a secret entrance into the Dragon Palace. In the audio drama, the Passage of Jun-Chi is interpreted as a painting and statue within the Dragon Palace that leads to the Guardian of Kublai Khan.
LEGO Description[]
Unofficial Translation[]
Notes[]
- Like in most other Orient Expedition media, Maharaja Lallu is only called the Maharaja in this audio drama. He is never referred to by name.
- Unlike the previous Adventurers audio drama 5542644 Die Jagd nach dem Pharaonenschatz, Die Suche nach dem Golden Drachen is more like an audio book with a single narrator reading all of the prose and dialogue, rather than each individual character having a specific voice actor.
