5702 LEGO Chess is a LEGO video game that was released in 1998 exclusively for the PC. Some of the copies of the game came with 2586 The Crazy LEGO King.
Gameplay[]
The game is hosted in the Crazy LEGO King's throne room. There are three different venues to play in: the player can choose to play chess with a Western theme (Cavalry and Indians), a Pirates theme (Imperial Guards and Pirates), or with a traditional chess theme. The player is defaulted to the white set but can choose which side they are on. Chess games can be played against a computer or a second player.
The Western and Pirates themes also have their own storylines in Story Game mode. This entails three consecutive chess matches that accompany CGI cutscenes, with the player always being the "heroic" white side (represented by Sheriff Wild Wyatt West and Admiral Woodhouse) going against the computer-controlled black side (represented by Dewey Cheatum and Captain Redbeard). During Story Game, a short in-engine cutscene plays whenever a chess piece is captured, depicting the two minifigures in comedic slapstick; these are compiled in the scrapbook and can be rewatched at any time after being seen once.
The game also has a separate "How to Play" mode where the Crazy LEGO King teaches the player the basics, rules, and tactics of chess.
Development[]
The game was originally intended to have Castle as a theme along with Western, Pirates, and traditional chess, but Castle was cut due to time restraints.[1]
Adventurers was planned to be a part of the game, but scrapped for unknown reasons. According to the script for the FMV story cutscenes, the pieces would have been Skeleton (Pawn), Slyboots (Bishop), Sam Grant (Knight), Mummy (Rook), Pippin Read (Queen), and Dr. Kilroy (King).[2]
Notes[]
- Oddly, on some computers, even if this game's disc is inserted into your computer's disc drive, it will give you an error message saying that it needs to be inserted first. There was an official patch that allows users to fix this problem, on Windows XP and higher.
- It was re-released in 2000 as 5722 LEGO Chess Masterpiece.
