What lurks beneath the waves?
Just because Mosasaurus wasn't a dinosaur doesn't mean he wasn't dangerous! A powerful swimmer, Mosasaurus' massive jaws let it catch huge prey. With this set, you can recreate Mosasaurus or any of three other creatures: Iguanodon, Dimetrodon, and Postosuchus.

Mosasaurus
"Meuse River lizard"
MOSE-ah-SAWR-us
Although not a dinosaur, this gigantic sea reptile ruled the Late Cretaceous oceans. Forty to fifty feet long, Mosasaurus used its powerful tail and paddle-like limbs to propel it through the water in search of prey. Mosasaurs ate just about anything they could catch in their long, toothy jaws - even smaller mosasaurs!

Dimetrodon
"two-measure tooth"
die-MET-roh-don
Long before the first dinosaur, Dimetrodon ruled the Permian Period. Although it sprawled its limbs out like a lizard and carried an ungainly sail on its back, Dimetrodon was a dangerous predator with strong jaws and sharp teeth, more closely related to our own furry ancestors than to any dinosaur.

Iguanodon
"Iguana tooth"
ig-WAH-no-don
Early paleontologists believed that Iguanodon was a giant, sprawling monster of a reptile with a horn on top of its nose. In actuality, it was a four-legged plant-eater that could walk or run on two legs when it needed to. That "horn" on its nose was actually a bone spike that Iguanodon carried on its thumb!

Postosuchus
"Post crocodile"
POST-oh-SOOK-us
Although not a dinosaur, this agile and deadly hunter was a very close relative. Postosuchus ran on all four legs, relying on its strong jaws and sharp, curved teeth to take care of its prey. As a top predator of the Late Triassic, Postosuchus had very little to worry about from the small, early dinosaurs of its time.

Background[]

Mosasaurus (which means "lizard of the Meuse River") was a large genus of Mosasaur from prehistory, measuring 48 feet long.
