7573 Battle of Alamut is a Prince of Persia set released in 2010. It includes two Alamut Guards, Dastan, Seso, Gool, Tamah and Nizam minifigures. The set also include a new LEGO Camel, a piece that is exclusive to only one other set.

Description

This set includes the main palace of Alamut, which is coloured white and gold. It includes the actual tower, and walls that extend out on either side. In front of the main tower, there are LEGO "barrel" pieces filled with translucent orange studs to recreate the scene in the Prince of Persia movie where Dastan drops the barrels of oil onto the enemy. On the walls there are also golden flags, and studs on the sides for parkour play. In between the two sides of the walls, there is a large gateway for the minifigures to enter through. There is also one camel, a cart with a flick-fire weapon, and 7 minifigures.

Background

In the Movie

In the Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time movie, Alamut is a peaceful city state and a neighbor of the Persian Empire. The city is located in a valley with natural water resources and is surrounded by fields and gardens. In the centre of the city are the royal palace and the sacred temple. The mystical Dagger of Time is in this temple. Alamut is a cultural and religious centre, a holy city. Unknown to most people the real source of the sands of time is in the catacombs under the city. This source is traditionally protected by priests and the Princess of Alamut. Probably due to its holy status Alamut city has never been conquered by enemies for a thousand years. Most kings, including Persian King Sharaman, consider attacking this city as an insult to gods and fear the destructive effects of such an act on the international relations of their states.

Alamut city is protected by city walls and Alamut soldiers wear white and golden coloured uniforms. There are no widespread forges for mass production of weapons in Alamut.

After false accusations of weapons smuggling supported by false evidence secretly fabricated by Nizam, the Persian Prince Tus decides to invade the city. During the capture Persian Prince Dastan sneaks in the city and opens the gates to minimize possible losses on both sides. After a series of adventures following the assassination of King Sharaman, Dastan returns to Alamut with Seso, Sheik Amar and Princess Tamina to stop Nizam, who controls the city with the Persian army (or Alamut Guards) and Hassansins under his orders.

The 7573 "Battle of Alamut" set is a combination of different elements from the movie. The fortress gates, traps and falling debris are elements from the invasion scenes at the beginning. The domed structure is a combination of the palace and the temple mostly featured near to the end of the movie.

All antagonist minifigures, Nizam, Alamut Guards and Hassansins are in fact Persians. The Battle of Alamut set contains no Alamut citizens or soldiers. From all the companions of Dastan, who came to the city with him at the end of the movie, only Seso is available in this set.

Real Alamut

Alamut was a mountain fortress located in northern Iran. It was built in a way that conquering the fortress would be extremely difficult. In 1090 the fortress was infiltrated and occupied by Hassan-i Sabbah. He was the founder of Hashshashins Order, known in the West as "the Assassins". The Hashshashins were a small but influential faction during the reign of the Seljuk Empire and during the crusades. They were famous for assassinating important leaders of their enemies.

Notes

  • This set was available for purchase on the Canadian Toys"R"us website on February 10th to 11th, but was taken down shortly.
  • The wall on the right of the citadel has steps that slide out of the wall. These can be used as passage up or down both inside and outside of the wall.
  • The ballista is used, in the film, as a Persian siege weapon when Alamut was attacked at the beginning. However, no Persian characters e.g Tus, Garsif, King Sharaman, Persian troops apart from Nizam, Dastan, the Alamut Guards and the Hassansins are included in the theme.
  • The catapult can be used to break down the breakaway wall on the left side.
  • All walls have bricks which allow Dastan to "run" along the wall sides like in the movie.
  • The dagger is hidden in a secret "shrine" on the bottom floor of the palace section. The top is removed for the dagger to be hidden underneath.
  • In the interior of the balcony which Nizam is appearing to be watching the battle from, there is a weapons rack with 2 axes. The Alamut Guard spears can be swapped with these. Also there is a crimson throne which Nizam can sit on.
  • Gool was originally named as "Giant Scimitar Hassansin" in preliminary images of the set. Also Gool uses a conical helmet unlike the other Hassansins. This is inaccurate to the movie, however, where Gool wears a wrap over his helmet. The helmet makes him look more like Garsif, Dastan's younger brother in the movie. He is later killed by Seso.
  • The guard towers feature an extra ammo for the rotating catapult.
  • On either side of the dagger shrine, there are 2 smaller shrines. On one there are 2 golden cups, and on the other is a gold scorpion.
  • During July's San Diego Comic-Con International, a Jack Sparrow minifigure had been inserted into this LEGO Prince of Persia set as a teaser.
