9450 Epic Dragon Battle is a Ninjago set to be released in summer 2012. The box-art shows Lloyd in his green ninja suit flying the four-headed dragon, Jay battling the Great Devourer, the head of the fire-dragon shooting a green ball at Lord Garmadon who is holding all four golden weapons, Sensei Wu in a cage with a snake-like building using 2 printed sloped pieces of a snake head like the one used in Venomari Shrine, and three Serpentine - Acidicus, Chokun, and Skalidor.

Description

The set includes a Serpentine jail in which Sensei Wu is being held captive, (representing the The Great Devourer's stomach) the Great Devourer, a huge dragon, and seven minifigures. Lloyd ZX is riding a large, four-headed elemental dragon which appears to be a combined version of all four elemental dragons, but in white with their secondary highlights rather than their full-blown color-schemes. The rest of the dragon is mainly green and white. There is a feature in the dragon that allows the wings to "flap" when a switch on the dragon's back is pressed. The dragon can also shoot their elemental energy balls out of the top two heads. The Great Devourer is made with various lime green and dark green pieces. The mouth can be opened and can hold any regular (non-snake general, or 4-armed) Ninjago mini-fig. A small feature is that the the top lime green piece can be moved to give him the appearance that it had in the TV show. There is, apparently, also a feature which allows you to take a red brick (representing it's heart) out of it's chest. And there is also a red mini spider included on the snake jail in this set.

Background

According to the show, Pythor is trying to release The Great Devourer by collecting 4 Fang Blades (Hypnobrai Fang Blade is included, though it's oddly gold). Pythor manages his goal and frees the Devourer. He and Sensei Wu become the giant Snake's first entree before he chases after the four ninjas. The monster consumes the Destiny's Bounty. It also destroys the Ultra Sonic Raider. The monster slithers to Ninjago City, where it would consume and consume. The four-headed dragon saves the ninja after they stall the reptile for time. The dragon and the snake fight, but the snake wins once more.

The set, however, has a different story. The Great Devourer is still unlocked. However, Sensei Wu is locked up instead of snake food. Jay must fight Acidicus, Skalidor and Chokun to free him. Also, Lloyd has retrieved the 4-headed dragon and has to fight the Great Devourer in a climatic showdown. The end result of the fight is up to the person playing with the set.

Notes

  • Lord Garmadon is holding all of the four golden weapons. This recreates when at the end of the final episode (of season 2) he harnesses the power of the golden weapons to literally kill the Great Devourer.
  • This is the second set to include all four golden weapons, first being the 2507 Fire Temple.
  • Skalidor and Acidicus are exclusive to this set.
  • Despite the Product Description from Hamleys mentioning Pythor in it, he is exclusive to 9449 Ultra Sonic Raider and is not found in this set.
  • There seems to be a orange brick separator included in the set.
  • Chokun is shown as having Skales's head on the box art. However, the box art is probably unfinished.
  • Although Lloyd ZX has posable legs in the set, in the show, he still had short legs.
  • Jay was going to have a NRG suit.
  • There were a lot of differences between the set and the show:
    • Lloyd still had short legs in the show.
    • In the show, Acidicus, Skaildor, and the rest of the Serpentine were in the Fangpyre tomb while the Great Devourer was free.
    • In the show, Sensei Wu was eaten by the Great Devourer after it was released. However, in the set, he is in a snake prison.
    • Lloyd is riding the dragon in the set but in the show he didn't.
    • In size comparison, the ultra-dragon is much bigger then the Devourer, even though it's the other way around in the show.
    • On the box, the scenery looks more like a cliff, but the battle is set in Ninjago City in the show. However, there appears to be a city in the background on the box art.
    • In the TV show, the Great Devourer was controlled by nobody. However, in the set, it appears as if either Lord Garmadon or the Serpentine are controlling the beast.
    • The Great Devourer is assumably smaller then the Snake Truck Ambush, which is very different to the show.
    • In the TV show, the ultra-dragon could seat all four ninjas, in the set it could only fit one.
  • On the unfinished box art Lord Garmadon didn't have a bone on his helmet.
  • On the unfinished box art Skalidor had Bytar's head.
  • This set is now available at Toys R Us.
