The Balrog is a Brick-built figure first released as a BrickHeadz in 2023 and as a minifigure scale build in 2025. In 2012, the Balrog first appeared in LEGO The Lord of the Rings: The Video Game. It would later appear in LEGO Dimensions in 2015.
Background[]
The "Balrog of Morgoth" was awoken by the Dwarves when they mined too deep under Middle-earth, and it then was awoken again when the Fellowship of the Ring entered the Mines of Moria many years later. It chased them towards the bridge of Khazad-Dum, a narrow walkway over an extremely deep chasm. The Fellowship reached the other side except Gandalf the Grey, who stood his ground against the Balrog in order to buy the others time. Gandalf smashed the bridge with his staff and the Balrog fell into the chasm, but Gandalf's ankle was caught on its fiery whip. As a result, they both fell, and landed in a pool deep under the mountain. Gandalf chased it up to the top of the mountain Zirakzigil and fought it, where Gandalf eventually killed the Balrog, throwing its corpse off the mountain. With all his life force used up, Gandalf died, but was sent back to Middle-earth as Gandalf the White.
LEGO Dimensions[]
Due to Lord Vortech's abduction of Frodo Baggins and Gandalf's departure to rescue him, the Balrog was not destroyed and instead fell under Vortech's sway. Ridden by The Riddler, the Balrog got a second chance to destroy Gandalf along with his new allies Batman and Wyldstyle. When the three entered Minas Tirith, which was taken over by Orcs, The Riddler gave them various clues to finding the indemnification of “his new pet”. However, with their combined skills and various resources-such as Laval's Fire Lion and the Guard of the Tower-the heroes were able to defeat it, and the Balrog fell from the pinnacle of Minas Tirith while the Riddler managed to escape.
Notes[]
- While in Lego Dimensions The Riddler called the Balrog “his new pet”, the Balrog was actually a thinking being like him, rather than a beast.
- The fiery whip in the 2025 set has a Wolverine claw piece attached to the end
