Early Belville sets were packaged under the LEGO System boycott. This was dropped in 1999. Sets in the theme contain pieces specially made for Belville and that later appeared in normal LEGO sets. Many bricks also have unique features such as embedded glitter. The sets include larger pieces, often in a pink and purple colour scheme, and depict scenes from fairy tales and fantasy as well as everyday life.

In its early stages, Belville included sets related to leisurely life. From 1999 to 2009, Belville also included some fairy tale-related sets. Different sub-themes of fairy tales were introduced. In 2005, five Belville fairy tale sets related to Hans Christian Andersen were released.
In 2007, a Belville Advent Calendar was released. As of 2010 no new sets were available on LEGO.com, and the theme has been discontinued and replaced by a new theme, Friends, although they are still selling some Belville sets because they still have them in stock. Belville was the first theme made for females.
