I thing this is a hilariously silly attempt to solve the issue that about 5 people have, by inflicting a punishment on the whole community. If you want to stop those people who are ruining chat for everyone, just ban them for a week.

At this point, it had spread to much more than five people. I didn't consider it "punishment", really, just a break and a catalyst for recovery. Banning would have caused more arguments and drama, and besides, there are other places off-wikia people could have chatted.

Seconded. Most of the conflict over the past few weeks was because a user who was causing problems was banned. Exacerbating the situation more doesn't seem like a good idea. It's just a break, hopefully where everyone will realize the problem and do what they can to improve the situation.

Its still a minority - it spread to other users because those user had to try and deal with it, but there are many more users on chat not involved than were. The term punishment was the reason used on the admin wiki, along with the idea that everyone will suddenly edit because they can't chat. At any rate, disabling features should require the input of more than 3 admins and a couple of users, which didn't happen here.
With that reasoning, it sounds fair enough to have undone it for now, though I am still of the opinion that a break would be quite healthy for the community. I never thought it should be "punishment", really. Just a little thought-provoking, maybe.
