Instead of getting the minifigures physically to play with them, all are playable after some levels. And the level packs are unlockable after playing some levels in story mode. However, the physical minifigures are available on sets to be playable unlike the videogame some characters are unplayable.

For example, Homer Simpson is unlocked after playing the Springfield level Story Mode and Bart Simpson is purchasable after the level.
