Background[]
Déagol was the friend of Sméagol, both of them part of a hobbit-folk that lived near the Gladden Fields east of the Misty Mountains. On one of Sméagol's birthdays, the pair went fishing in the fields, and Déagol discovered the One Ring that had lain there since the fall of Isildur. Enthralled by the object, he intended to keep it, even when a similarly enraptured Sméagol asked to be given it as a gift. Sméagol, consumed with lust for the Ring, promptly murdered the weaker Déagol to gain possession of the treasure. He would afterwards be filled with horror at his actions but retained possession of the evil thing that had moved him to such deeds.
