The Easterlings are characters that appear in LEGO The Lord of the Rings: The Video Game.
Background[]
The Easterlings are a race of Men from the far east of Middle-earth, hence their name; they were a savage people, more primitive than those friendlier to the Elves and yet formidable warriors: dressed in scarlet livery, equipped with golden plates, armed with swords, axes and halberds and some even riding upon horses or in chariots in battle. In the First Age they had done many foul deeds, such as enslaving the native Men of Hithlum and driving off the Elves.
Early on in the Second Age, they were perverted by Sauron, remaining ever loyal to his cause even in after days; to them he was a wrathful god, and they feared and revered him greatly. During the Black Years, Sauron's empire expanded over much of the Westlands and he encouraged many men from the east to seek better loot - these folk troubled with the northmen and pillaging their homes in league with the orcs. One of their ancient kings received a Ring of Power, becoming one of the Ringwraiths bound to the Enemy's will.
Without Sauron's tyranny driving them in the aftermath of his defeat in the War of the Last Alliance, the restless and evil-hearted Easterlings that had settled in and around Rhûn turned on one another, making some flee westwards. Envying the might of Gondor in the days of its glory, these wild peoples began to trouble the kingdom through periodic raids. Moved by the return of Sauron, men from the east began to intrude upon parts Rhovanion, occupying the Vales of the Anduin. The tribal confederacies called Balchoth and Wainriders resumed their aggressive stance against Gondor and the northmen, wreaking havoc wherever they went at the Dark Power's behest.
During the War of the Ring, regiments of Easterlings assembled within the borders of the Black Land; they were unleashed alongside the Morgul-host at the Battle of Pelennor Fields and later accompanied the armies of Mordor at the Battle of the Black Gate - which saw the vanquishing of the One Enemy. Bereft of their Lord, the Easterlings retreated back to their lands, although they maintained open hostility towards Gondor and their faith in Sauron.
Notes[]
