Various Elemental Masters receive invitations to the Tournament of the Sources, as does an individual resembling Beatrix. Later, several Lava-Tides break into Kreel's junkyard and attempt to hijack a mech only to be attacked by Wyldfyre. They set a fire while attempting to escape but are halted by Nya's timely efforts and soon driven off. Nya is proud of Wyldfyre's efforts to step up after Kai's disappearance but encourages her to take things slowly.
Meanwhile, Kai himself is wandering in the Nether-Space with Bonzle, trying to avoid the attention of the Forbidden Five members still trapped with them. Back in Ninja, Sora is surprised when Arin tells her about his old best friend, Frak, who was also a fan of the Ninja. Arin feels like he shouldn't accompany his fellow Ninja to the Tournament of the Sources, but Sora encourages him to do so. Meanwhile, acting on advice from the Source Dragon of Motion, Lloyd rides Jiro back to Egalt and Rontu's temple to pick up Zane and ask the two dragons to accompany the Ninja to the Tournament.
Zane, who is in the midst of training to master Rising Dragon, gets a tip from Lloyd that enables him to perform the technique. Lloyd then brings the three up to speed on what's happened since they last met, and then makes the request that Egalt and Rontu join the Ninja. However, the two refuse, explaining that they have nothing further to teach the Ninja. To Lloyd's shock, they urge him to accept the mantle of master, and Egalt and Rontu then attack Lloyd when he expresses doubt in his ability.
Their point is soon proven when Lloyd manages to defeat both of them, all without spilling a drop of stew Wyldfyre sent for Egalt. Despite this, Lloyd is unconvinced of his ability to stand in for his old mentor, Master Wu, but the dragon masters encourage him. Apparently convinced, Lloyd begins training the team-including Cole. Following a session, Arin expresses his wish to remain behind, but Lloyd surprises him by encouraging him to come. Believing that winning the tournament will be unnecessary, Lloyd feels that they will need to solve the mystery of who has been attacking the dragons and believes that Arin will be a great help in this matter.
Riding several of their dragons and using Arin's new car, the Ninja travel to the waterfall shrine where Wu met Bonzle long ago, which the Source Dragon of Motion explains is a gateway to the Tournament of the Sources. They also encounter Euphrasia, also on her way to the tournament, and see her enter an elevator. However, when they attempt to follow, they discover a problem: they haven't received invitations, which are apparently needed to activate the elevator. Spotting a speaking tube, Sora calls into it, and the Ninja are then greeted by Bleckt "Minister of Ledgering" for the tournament.
Bleckt explains that his family has been in charge of the tournament since its inception, and then informs the Ninja that their lack of an invitation means that they aren't allowed to participate. However, Lloyd refuses to be thwarted so easily, and the Ninja follow the elevator up when another Elemental Master arrives. Unfortunately, they then come under attack from a force of robotic guards. The bots prove immune to Sora's Elemental Powers, but the Ninja begin using their climbing gear to ascend the cliff leading to the City of the Temples while their dragon friends distract the enemy.
Unexpectedly, the Ninja discover that their escapades are being shown to various spectators, and are then greeted by Bleckt and his nephew, Roby. Unlike Bleckt, Roby is enthusiastic about the unauthorized arrival of the Ninja, and he's also the one in charge of the tournament following the retirement of his parents. Roby enthusiastically invites the Ninja to take part in the tournament and welcomes them into the City of the Temples. Arin and Riyu, separated from the others and surrounded by guards, are unexpectedly greeted by a familiar-to Arin at least-face: his old friend Frak.
