This is getting crazy. Everyone here is using huge sigs, but they are leaving the SUBST in their prefs. This makes the pages have way too much code, and look bad. I propose using the {{Nosubst}}, and therefor keeping the sigs small and clean. See this page's source, and specifically my sig for why it should be this way. ajr 19:02, October 27, 2009 (UTC)

- Yeah, I mean mine is sooo simple.--Makuta Tarkairadan talk 18:50, May 8, 2011 (UTC)
- Yes, but only if we don't block a user as soon as he has two warnings or so. I mean, it was difficult to me to understand the custom signature thing, and even with a Guide on his, we shouldn't be that serious on signature things. Vandalism and spam is much more important. Rather help a user if he doesn't understand what we want from him. Samdo994 talk contribs 14:30, May 9, 2011 (UTC)
- Yes, but instead of blocking someone, show them how to do it properly. - nxt 13:36, May 15, 2011 (UTC)

Im presuming this is sig templates. Im neutral as I dont use them (I seem to be the only one, I just use the preferences thing). Since I dont have a clue what your on about, im neutral. Kingcjc 22:05, February 22, 2010 (UTC) (stupid keyboards being American)
- If it is just a few letters of wikimarkup, I am fine. What I'm not fine with is lines upon lines of code being added in. Ajraddatz Talk 23:04, February 22, 2010 (UTC)
I agree that sig code clutter can be pretty annoying, but I suggest that we should be also allowed to use the system myself and a few others are using too (if we're using big long coded sigs)- having one page for the sig, and another which is used to display it (see User:Nighthawk leader/sig and User:Nighthawk leader/sig1). This is because not all wikis have {{Nosubst}}, and signature preferences are Wikia-wide. Also should we also say that sigs shouldn't go over more than one line, eg Nighthawk
leader? NightblazeSaber 11:07, February 23, 2010 (UTC)
- Just reviving this forum (and categorising it). Would it be ok to set up a vote for the code clutter thing, eg "code must not be longer than one line of code" or something like that? Also, another thing concerning me is a recent modification a user made to their signature, which now reads "I'm <removed>! A.K.A The Sex God" (don't want to directly point this user out, but I need an example, sorry). Would we be able to have another rule where the signature must be appropriate for all audiences? It is a toy wiki, so the wiki is most likely being read/edited anonymously by younger users. NightblazeSaber 10:25, September 26, 2010 (UTC)
- OK, so for my sig I use <code>{{Subst:#ifexist:User:Ajraddatz/sig|{{Subst:#ifexist:Template:Nosubst|{{Subst:Nosubst|User:Ajraddatz/sig}}|{{Subst:User:Ajraddatz/sig}}}}|[[User:Ajraddatz|Ajraddatz]] [[User_talk:Ajraddatz|Talk]]}}</code>. That should satisfy everyone. If the nosubst template exists, then it uses what is in User:Ajraddatz/sig. If it doesn't exist, then it uses Ajraddatz Talk. I'll start writing this later today; I obviously forgot about it before ^.^ ajr 14:08, September 26, 2010 (UTC)
Two things:
- How do you presume to enforce/get other people to do this? I couldn't show coconutrules how-in the end, he gave me his password so I could do it for him.

- It's often useful to have a different signature on other wikis, in case you have special things on X wiki that aren't on Y wiki.

@Ajr: thanks for putting your signature code down here (didn't think #ifexist would work in that field, but I added it after I saw yours and now when I sign on a new wiki it doesn't come up as {{SUBST:Nighthawk leader/sig1}} or whatever it was :D). Anyway, back on topic, I really don't see what's wrong with just limiting the number of characters that a signature takes up, eg "your signature cannot be over 100 characters in length". Having a simple signature, or using nosubst or two sig pages really don't take up much room when signing so I don't see what's wrong with any of these methods. I think we have to be relatively flexible as signature code is used Wikia-wide and people use several different methods for signatures, but at the same time, we need to get rid of signatures that take up 18 lines or so. NightblazeSaber 03:54, October 6, 2010 (UTC)
- I agree - it should only effect signatures that are over... say.. 100 characters? ajr 04:02, October 6, 2010 (UTC)
- Well, 100 characters is:
- aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
- So I think that should work ok as an absolute maximum NightblazeSaber 07:33, October 6, 2010 (UTC)
- Another two suggestions:
- Can we make it so that a signature must contain a link to a user's userpage and/or talk page? It's kind of annoying when someone leaves you a message with a sig that doesn't link back to them, and you have to go and manually type in their username just to reply.
- Can we make it so that the user signature must contain something that easily identifies the user? This could be simply their username, a common nickname of their username (eg, current ones like cjc or Tat), or even a symbol or something, but (and I'm sorry for using this user as an example, I'm not intending to single you out, there are a few other I've seen out there) "Tatooine <===> Dantooine" really doesn't say "this message is from Happybrick5" to me (again, sorry for using you as an example if you read this). Random section break[]
Can we prevent instruction creep and just set the limit to 200 characters? (My signature, not among the most complicated, is a good 104. And what about the poor souls with long usernames?) FB100Z • talk • contribs 05:25, May 11, 2011 (UTC)
- Alternatively, we can just make this whole thing subjective. If the code is really annoying, you should get rid of it, but if not, keep it. FB100Z • talk • contribs 05:36, May 11, 2011 (UTC)
- That's what using nested templates or using #subst is for, it cuts right down on the character count. We're not limiting the amount of code you have in your sig, just what shows up when you hit edit. eg, my sig is 314 characters of code, but only 29 show up due to using 2 templates, so it's not an issue. But I really wouldn't worry about being 4 characters over :) NightblazeSaber 23:56, May 15, 2011 (UTC)
- Can we make it so the signature cannot make the line spacing have to increase? - nxt 17:43, May 18, 2011 (UTC)
- I think the Images must be smaller than 30 pixels in height. is there to try to limit the line spacing already. NightblazeSaber 23:40, May 18, 2011 (UTC)
