Class 3 article

Hector Barbossa is a Pirates of the Caribbean minifigure released in 2011 within 4181 Isla De Muerta and 4192 Fountain of Youth.

Background

Captain Hector Barbossa appears in all four Pirates of the Caribbean movies.

Hector served as first mate on the Black Pearl under the command of Captain Jack Sparrow, until he raised a mutiny against him. He later marooned Jack on an island and took command over the Black Pearl. Soon, he and his crew became cursed by the Aztec gold they found on the Isla de Muerta, meaning that under the moonlight they were revealed as un-dead skeletons, and were therefore almost invincible, being able to walk under water and be shot or stabbed without dying, but they also had no sense of taste or touch. The curse could only be lifted once all 882 Aztec coins that were stolen were returned to the chest they came from, along with a blood sacrifice from each crew member. Before realizing the cursed nature of the gold, the pirates strapped a cannon to Bootstrap's bootstraps and threw "Bootstrap" Bill Turner overboard (without realizing he had sent what would later become the last piece of gold, to his son William). The pirates collected all but Turner's coin, and thus they need the blood of a descendant of Turner to break the curse.

In The Curse of the Black Pearl, he sets out to find the last piece of Aztec Gold and initially believes Elizabeth Swann is Bootstrap's descendant, before Will Turner reveals himself to be. He maroons Jack and Elizabeth on Rumrunner's Isle and sets out to lift the curse. Jack warns him about Admiral Norrington's men attempting to catch his crew in the crossfire, Jack then deceives Barbossa and Will lifts the curse just as Jack uses his one shot to shoot the now mortal Barbossa.

In Dead Man's Chest, Jack picks up his hat in Tia Dalma's shack. After Jack the Monkey is freed from his cage, he stands at the foot of a concealed man lying down. After Jack Sparrow's death, he reveals himself to the remaining crew, having being resurrected by Tia Dalma.

In At World's End, he leads the voyage to return Jack Sparrow and the Black Pearl from Davy Jones' Locker. He constantly bargains with Jack and Sao Feng in order to get the Brethren Court to convene, so that he can fulfil his vow of freeing the godess Calypso from her human form, Tia Dalma. After the pirates are victorious against the East India Trading Company, he steals the Black Pearl from Jack again.

In On Stranger Tides, Barbossa and his crew are viciously attacked by Blackbeard and his ship, making Barbossa lose his right leg. He becomes a pegleged privateer and is sent by King George II to lead an expedition to the Fountain of Youth in order to beat the Spanish. It is later revealed that Barbossa only became a privateer so he could go after Blackbeard and have revenge on him. At the Fountain, Barbossa fights Blackbeard and stabs him with his poisonous sword. Claiming Blackbeard's magic sword, he then becomes a pirate again and becomes captain of the Queen Anne's Revenge, sailing full speed to Tortuga.

Captain Barbossa is back! Well, at least most of him is. Don’t be fooled by his limp or missing limb, this pegleg pirate still won’t be slowed in the race for the Fountain of Youth or to avenge the loss of his leg by hunting down the man he blames for his demise, Blackbeard. Barbossa is reformed from his outlaw ways and now sails under the flag of the Crown, as a privateer charged with finding the Fountain of Youth.
