In a series of flashbacks set in the Wyldness, the dragonHeatwave encounters a mysterious craft that proves to carry a Caregiver robot and her charge: an infant Wyldfyre. The dragon assists in the upbringing of the girl, protecting her from the hazards of their home and her own risky behavior. The young Wyldfyre is fascinated with the fire of her world, despite her Caregiver's warnings that "Fire is danger!" The Caregiver also teaches Wyldfyre about family, and the girl is quick to decide that hers includes Heatwave.
Following the Merge, Wyldfyre unexpectedly develops the power to generate flames around her hands, and spends the next few years training with her powers. Unfortunately, the day comes when Heatwave is captured by the Claws of Imperium, and despite her Caregiver's warnings about the danger involved, Wyldfyre declares "I will be the danger!" In the present, Wyldfyre and Lloyd, together with Heatwave and variousotherdragons, escape into Imperium's streets after briefly engaging several Imperium Guards. However, the energy barrier around the city prevents the dragons from flying away, forcing them to find another route of escape.
The Imperium Teen Protection Force accost Arin for his pro-dragon sympathies, only for Lloyd's herd of escaped dragons to come racing by and distract the Imperians long enough for Arin and Riyu to escape. Lloyd, meanwhile, tries to convince Wyldfyre to get the dragons under some level of control and thus prevent harm to Imperium civilians. Rapton and his men try to halt the stampeded but fail miserably, shortly before Lord Ras orders them to the Advanced Systems Lab. At the lab, Dr. LaRow reports to Empress Beatrix on their status, and upon the Claws arriving Ras has them take Photac Beast mounts.
Back at the Monastery of Spinjitzu, Kai's video game session after stopping a Merge quake solo is interrupted by mysterious equipment malfunctions and the whisperings of a mysterious voice. Forced to take the former vehicle bay elevator, Kai finds himself in a strange structure underneath the monastery, and spots a glowing orb that proves to be the source of the voice. Kai follows the form, which knows his name, through a (formerly) locked door. In Imperium, Arin has become separated from Riyu but then runs into Lloyd and Wyldfyre's dragon stampede, while Riyu has been taken captive by Percival and delivered to Beatrix's palace.
To make matters worse, the would-be escapees reach the city gate only to find their path blocked by the Claws of Imperium and their Photac mounts. As Lloyd questions Sora's loyalty with this development, Sora proves her true allegiance by knocking out Dr. LaRow after the villainous scientist gloats over her success. Sora is then forced into a clash with Dorama, eager for payback for his pervious defeat, but he unwittingly helps her to free her dragon friend. In the square, Rapton offers the Ninja, Wyldfyre, and dragons a chance to surrender rather than face the indestructible Photacs.
Wyldfyre, to Lloyd's utter lack of surprise, chooses to lead the dragons into battle, while Sora rides into battle to join her friends. Arin is none too pleased with her for getting the Photacs working, but Sora informs him and Lloyd that she built in a means of shutting the beasts down. However, it requires her to get an elemental power boost from Riyu, so Lloyd sends her and Arin off to find him while he and Wyldfyre aid the dragons in the battle. Kai, meanwhile, continues his strange journey only to run into Nya; while he thinks they're still beneath the monastery, she is under the impression that Kai has somehow made his way to the Cloud Kingdom archives.
