The Ninja find themselves saddled with the unsettling presence of Emperor Garmadon aboard the Destiny's Bounty 3.0, reinforced when he shuts down their flight engines in midair. Lloyd follows his father into the ship's interior, and finds that Garmadon seems to have little memory of anything related to his humanity and less regard for it. Meanwhile, Cole learns of Jay's intent to propose to Nya after Kai inquires about it. Though excited, the Earth ninja proves as unhelpful as Kai in his efforts to prod Jay into taking action.
The unpredictable Garmadon informs the Ninja and P.I.X.A.L. that he believes the Oni used the Realm Crystal to invade Ninjago. Believing that destroying it will halt their plans, he intends to go after it alone, as his Oni nature will allow him to traverse the darkness-filled Ninjago City. Lloyd refuses to let him go on his own, and reasons that his own Oni heritage will enable him to accompany Garmadon, though Garmadon himself is doubtful. As they near Borg Tower, Jay attempts to make his proposal to Nya, but Garmadon walks in on the moment and causes Jay to reconsider his timing.
Lloyd straps on a headcam and his sword as he prepares to drop into Ninjago City, and orders Cole to give Garmadon a katana. The emperor quickly uses it to attack the Ninja and P.I.X.A.L., which proves to have been intended to generate conflict that would restore his mystical abilities. Not trusting his father but seeing no other options, Lloyd parachutes into the darkness after him. Though the dark mist clouding the city initially seems to be poisoning him, he regains his composure after a moment and joins Garmadon in heading towards the tower. Along the way they come across Cyrus Borg, whom Garmadon explains is in a deep sleep caused by the Oni, but despite Lloyd's objections Garmadon refuses to bring him along in search of help.
In another part of the city, a group of still conscious citizens are holed in in the Ninjago News Center, where an employee named Vinny is attempting to call for help. Receiving his message, the Ninja aboard the Bounty are conflicted, but decide to take the ship to their rescue while P.I.X.A.L. remains behind with the Samurai X Mech to extract Lloyd and Garmadon if needed. Arriving at Borg Tower, Lloyd and Garmadon find a pair of Oni on guard whom Garmadon quickly leads Lloyd in attacking.
Garmadon saves Lloyd from the Oni during the fight, but quickly assures him that his concern is for the success of their mission, not his son. Lloyd is frustrated by his behavior, but unable to argue as they make their way into the depths of the structure. They soon find the Realm Crystal, and Garmadon attacks in an attempt to destroy it only to be thrust back. The dark mist pouring from the crystal then transforms into a terrifying Oni, the Omega, who easily repels both Garmadon and Lloyd's attacks against him. He then questions why Garmadon, an Oni, has not destroyed Ninjago himself, before vowing to destroy the realm and put an end to the First Spinjitzu Master's power of Creation once and for all.
