Background[]

A talented opera singer and actress, Irene Adler was for a time romantically involved with the then future King of Bohemia. During their romance, Adler obtained a photograph of the two of them that the king later sought to recover, fearing that it would endanger his impending marriage to a noblewoman. The king thus sought the assistance of Sherlock Holmes, but Adler managed to outwit even the formidable detective but made no effort to interfere in the king's new romance. She thus became notable for being one of the few people-and the only woman-ever known to have bested Sherlock Holmes.
