LEGOLAND is a LEGO theme that ran from 1969 to 1991. The theme's sets varied, including Town Buildings, Rocket Ships, Rodeos, and much more. It was aimed at children in the 5-11 year old age range.

The LEGOLAND brand was retired in 1992, when the System branding was reintroduced.

Background[]

Original LEGOLAND (1969-1976)[]

The LEGOLAND theme as introduced in 1969 was initially used to categorize a large number of sets which ranged from every day city buildings, to aircraft and space craft. The pre-minifigure (often nicknamed "stiffies") was introduced in 1975 which acted as an accompaniment to the building and vehicle sets.

Classic LEGOLAND (1978-1992)[]

In 1977, the then Lego CEO Kjeld Kirk Kristiansen pushed a new strategy of creating and marketing a series of sets he termed a "system within the system", which lead to a restructuring of the LEGOLAND line in 1978 and a mass introduction of new sets, being organized into the three themes - Castle, Town, and Space (respectively representing, Past, Present and Future),. Each theme would make use of the Minifigure to base both the scale of the sets, and to encourage imaginative play. The revamping of the Trains theme in 1980 was very much an extension of this with the buildings and the rolling stock designed to match the sets in Town.

LEGOLAND became an umbrella in which to house these three themes and sub-themes which would develop in future years, and also the distinctive blue-on-yellow branding and packaging was introduced.

Although the themes of Town, Space and Castle continued in various forms (along with their various sub-themes), the LEGOLAND branding was dropped in 1992 and replaced by System.
