LEGO Mursten are the first sets to have the Lego label. In 1952, Godtfred Kirk Christiansen decided that they needed a more descriptive name and he added the phrase LEGO Mursten (LEGO bricks) to the boxes, and in 1953 the sets were renamed simply LEGO Mursten. The original Automatic Binding Bricks continued to be manufactured under the LEGO Mursten theme. From this point on the brand name LEGO is printed inside all bricks.
LEGO Mursten bricks[]
Compared to Automatic binding bricks, LEGO Mursten has added several new bricks (1x2, 2x3, 2x8, 2x10, 2x12, 2x14 studs). There were also 4x4 corner bricks and a new thick baseplate 10x20.
The bricks are fully compatible with modern Lego bricks, but they have slots on one or more sides into which it was possible to insert windows, doors or cardboard picture cards. Furthermore, they do not have tubes on the underside, which were added in 1958. The third significant difference lies in the plastic used - while modern bricks use acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS), Lego Mursten bricks have been molded from cellulose acetate (CA). However, it is not very stable, so the bricks deformed within a few years.
In 1954 new type of door and windows was introduced, though these were still attached by slots in the bricks.
LEGO Mursten sets[]
The sets were packaged in the style of Automatic binding bricks. They contained bricks in 4 colors (white, red, green, yellow) and carefully assembled into checkerboard patterns. These sets were only sold only Denmark and Norway.
Box Art[]
The upper image was the 1953-1955 LEGO Mursten design for smaller boxes only. The lower image was the 1953-1955 LEGO Mursten design for larger boxes. A photograph of Ole Kirk Christiansen's grandchildren was used on the lid.
