lLEGO The Hobbit is a video game that was released on the 8th of April, 2014 (along with the Blu-Ray release of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug) in North America and on the 11th of April, 2014 in other territories. It was released on the Xbox 360, Xbox One, Wii U, PS3, PS4, 3DS, Vita, Mac and PC.
The game is set around the first two films of Peter Jackson's The Hobbit trilogy, An Unexpected Journey and The Desolation of Smaug. The Battle of the Five Armies storyline was announced by WB at the official press release to be releasing as DLC content following the release of the movie, but WB later shelved the content altogether, stating on Gamespot, on March 16th, 2015, that there would be no adaptions created for the game.
Playable characters include Bilbo Baggins and Gandalf the Grey, alongside all of the dwarves: Thorin, Fíli, Kíli, Óin, Glóin, Dwalin, Balin, Bifur, Bofur, Bombur, Dori, Nori and Ori. Warner Bros. adds that each dwarf will have his own unique ability, mentioning that Bombur can use his belly as a trampoline.
Locations visited will include Bag End, Hobbiton, The Misty Mountains, Goblin-town, Mirkwood, Lake-Town, Dol Guldur, Rivendell and The Lonely Mountain.
Players "will also be able to mine for gems, discover loot from enemies, and craft powerful magical items or build immense new LEGO structures," according to the game's press release, suggesting that Minecraft-esque elements could make their way into the next LEGO adventure.
In March, LEGO The Hobbit: The Video Game DEMO was released for PC [1].

Notes
- The game was revealed via the instruction booklets in the The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug sets.
- Ori appears in stills and the trailer with no cape on, unlike his physical appearance.
- A DLC pack based on The Battle of the Five Armies storyline was revealed by WB to be in production in a press release in early 2014, but Warner Bros. confirmed in March 2015 that there were no plans for that release, much to the disappointment of fans. It is unknown whether or not the game will get a re-release with the inclusion of The Battle of the Five Armies story. Since the announcement, several fans have created online petitions to WB in favor of releasing the DLC, one petition having currently accrued 1,091 supporters.
- Christopher Lee serves as the narrator for the game.
- The instruction build from The LEGO Movie video game appears.
- You can customise your own horse, Warg or pony to ride around Middle-earth.
- The trailer and a special code to unlock an in-game item were included in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug Blu-ray and DVD.
- Some of the names of the levels are also the names of chapters in The Hobbit book.
- Minikits in this game resemble a barrel with equipment inside.
- This the second video game to include playable Big Figs, the other is LEGO Marvel Super Heroes.
References
- Most of the achievements/trophies are named after quotes from the films.
- The characters from the Boss Disguise cheat reference other media:
- William, Tom and Bert reference the comedy film ¡Three Amigos! by wearing Mariachi hats on their heads just like the main characters.
- Smaug references Sherlock by wearing a deerstalker hat. Benedict Cumberbatch played the title character while Martin Freeman played his partner John Watson.
- Sauron's silhouette references Monybags from the Monopoly board game.
- Azog references Big Daddy from the video game Bioshock.
- The names of many achievements reference other media:
- "Lord of the Prance" references the musical Lord of the Dance
- "Dawn of the Mushroom King" references The Mushroom King from the Super Mario Bros. video game series.
- The quest "Snow and Fire" is a reference to the book series A Song of Fire and Ice and its television adaption Game of Thrones. The dwarf also references the character Jon Snow.
Differences from Film and Video Game
An Unexpected Journey
- A Dwarf miner finds the Arkenstone but Thorin and Bofur find it in the video game
- Peter Jackson's cameo appearance, unlike the movie, is recognizable since he is not shown in Dwarf make-up.
- After the Elves arrived around the same time Erebor was destroyed and taken over by Smaug, Thranduil gets upset at the Elves standing next to him who were laughing at Thorin, causing him to walk away. This didn't happen in the movie cause Thranduil instead refused to help Thorin and his kin.
- In the video game Frodo and Sam see Old Bilbo exercising.
- Except for Bilbo and Frodo, Sam and Rosie Cotton never appeared in the beginning of the movie despite appearing as playable characters in the game. That scene takes place around the same time Bilbo's 111th birthday occurred and Frodo leaves to suprise Gandalf before his arrival in The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring.
- Gandalf did not leave a mark on Bilbo's door in the video game.
- Bilbo has fish in the movie and shark in the video game as his supper.
- When Bilbo see Fíli and Kíli at the doorstep in the video game, Fíli grooms Kíli's hair.
- In the movie, Fíli takes Ori's plate and tosses it to Kíli. In the video game, Ori tosses his plate to Fíli.
- "Blunt the Knives" is ommited in the video game but there is a plate tossing minigame in "An Unexpected Gathering" during the "That's What Bilbo Baggins Hates" section.
- Gandalf was with the company in the movie but in the video game he and Bilbo met up with them.
- During the battle of Azanulbizar, Azog beheaded Thrór. In the video game, Azog punches the head that landed backwards before he kicks Thrór which sends him flying in the air.
- After Thorin decapitates Azog's hand in the video game, the hand mocks Azog, causing him to go after it.
- Fimbul never used a phone to call Azog in the movie after he and Yazneg spy on the company.
- Elrond was present in Rivendell when the company arrived while the elves are shown escorting the Orcs. In the movie, the company arrived before Elrond showed up.
- After the company made it inside The Misty Mountains, Bilbo's sword glows which reveals a trap but the trap in the movie happens while they are sleeping in addition to Thorin overhearing Bilbo telling Bofur of what he said about him.
- Bilbo never saw the ring fall out of Gollum in the movie. He finds it before his encounter with him.
- The washer machine and pig were not shown landing on top of the company with The Goblin King in the movie.
- Azog finds the company after they escaped Goblin Town. In the video game, he finds them camping out and cooking food.
The Desolation of Smaug
- Albert Dreary appears outside of Bree but in the video game he replaces the two rangers who stare at Thorin.
- In the film, Bilbo never saw Azog cooking food for the Orcs nor Beorn using the binoculars to spy on them.
- Thranduil seems to constantly look at himself in a mirror in the video game, although he never does this in the film.
- Bifur did not help Bilbo rescue the Dwarves from their jail cell in the movie.
- Gandalf met up with Radagast before they went into the cave, in order to make the game co-op friendly but Radagast was already inside the cave in the movie
- Although Tilda appears in the movie, she does not in the cutscenes despite appearing as a playable character.
- The dwarves and Bilbo leave Lake-town after the Lake-town Master welcomes them but in the movie they don't leave until the next day.
- In the film, when Bilbo tried to tell the company to come back when he found the Light and accidentaly knock the key, Thorin instantly came back and caught it with his foot. In the game, the bird taps on the door revealing the he swipes the key from Bilbo's hand.
- Legolas and Tauriel kill all the Orcs invading Bard's home but Tauriel helps banish them in the video game.
- Tauriel stays behind in Lake-town to take care of Kíli. In the video game, she heals him and leaves with Legolas to go after Bolg.
- In the video game, Bard sees the children Oin and Bofur cleaning the Orcs from the house. He does not know about the invasion in the movie as he was already in jail.
