The leader of Lake-town was the first to greet the Dwarves kindly when they arrived in Lake-town but he is a greedy ruler however, and is only helping the Dwarves to get his hands on dragon gold
The Master of Lake-town was well known as a businessman, which is how he came to his position. He agreed to help Thorin and Company in their efforts to reach the Lonely Mountain mainly because of the mood of the people of Lake-town, not out of any genuine feeling for the Dwarves. In The Hobbit novel he survives Smaug's attack on Lake-town and eventually flees with a considerable amount of money after Bard becomes king of Dale, dying in the wilderness. In The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies film, he is instead crushed by Smaug's corpse while attempting to flee Lake-town with the town treasury, and is survived by his minion Alfrid.
