Mr. Cunningham is a villainous minifigure from the Adventurers Dino Island theme in 2000. He is included in three different LEGO sets.

Description[]

Mr. Cunningham wears a dark grey jacket over a grey-and-red striped shirt that exposes his belly button, implying that he is overweight. He wears earth orange pants, with 5955 All Terrain Trapper having a black hip piece and other sets having an earth orange hip. His hat is an earth orange Safari Hat. His face is printed with brown sideburns, eyebrows, a mustache, and stubble.

Background[]

Mr. Cunningham is a tough henchman working for Sam Sinister and Alexia Sinister in their plot to capture dinosaurs from Dino Island. According to LEGO Mania Magazine, he is a master of disguise and has been known to change his disguises weekly.

In The Championship Challenge, Mr. Cunningham gets into a fight with Dr. Lightning in the stands after Sam Sinister tackles an all-star player. In Double Trouble on Dino Island, Mr. Cunningham flies the Research Glider and informs Sinister about Johnny Thunder and Mike making a crash-landing on Dino Island.

In 5730 LEGO Island 2: The Brickster's Revenge, Mr. Cunningham is found in the desert of Adventurers Island. When Pepper Roni speaks to him, he says that he saw a helicopter flying towards the jungle.

In all versions of LEGO Racers 2, Mr. Cunningham is an opponent racer in the Galactic Racing Championship. He races against the player on Dino Island, Mars, and the Arctic. He also appears on Sandy Bay in the arcade mode and bonus games. Since he has no dialogue, he is left unnamed in the PC and PlayStation 2 versions, and is only named in the Game Boy Advance version.

Behind the Scenes[]

A document describing the storyline of the Dino Island subtheme contains a character profile goes into greater detail than what is described in official publications, including Mr. Cunningham's backstory as a former boxer and military veteran.[1]

Mr. Cunningham
Is a man of the underworld, a tough guy who is not afraid of anything or anyone. A muscleman who serves Sam Sanister with the same devotion and efficiency as a ferocious watchdog. Mr. Cunningham is an ex-boxer and an ex-veteran. During his time in the military forces he was taught everything about mechanics. Like Johnny Thunder he can control most motorised inventions (planes, vehicles, boats). However, Mr. Cunningham lacks Johnny Thunder’s ingenuity but he is a worthy opponent who uses dirty tricks – an opponent to watch out for.

An unused model of Mr. Cunningham appears in Advance Issue 01's article on 5777 LEGO Island 2: The Brickster's Revenge, appearing to be a render intended for the PC version.[2] However, Mr. Cunningham does not appear in any capacity in either version.

Notes[]

  • Although Mr. Cunningham's name is consistent between most publications and languages (also including Russian and Japanese), the character was sometimes known as Sluwe Jacques (Cunning Jacques in Dutch) according to a fan website.[3][source?]
  • Mr. Cunningham shares several key traits with Slyboots. Both villains are accomplices of Lord Sam Sinister; their names have the synonyms "sly" and "cunning" (which are both translated as "sluwe" in their respective Dutch names); and Mr. Cunningham is also described as a former boxer in a LEGO Media story document.[1]
