Ninjago: Legacy is an anniversary sub-theme of Ninjago that was introduced in 2019[1].
Description[]
This theme consists of re-imagined versions of sets and concepts used in previous years. The first wave consisted of sets based on those that inspired Seasons 1 and 2. These sets make appearances in the Tales from the Monastery of Spinjitzu shorts and season 10 of Ninjago. The second wave was released in winter/early 2020 (January 1, 2020 in all countries) This second wave consists of re-imagined versions of concepts used in sets that inspired Seasons 2, 3 and 4.
Sets[]
These sets are based on sets released in 2011 through 2015, as well as concepts from Seasons 1 through 4 of Ninjago: Masters of Spinjitzu. Some character liberties were taken, such as Nya being depicted as a Ninja and the Overlord having a ghostly, four-armed form.

Appearances in animation[]
As with other Ninjago sets, the Legacy line has inspired animation in the Ninjago: Master of Spinjtizu animated series. However, Legacy characters and builds have not been fully covered by any of the animation.
Tales from the Monastery of Spinjitzu[]
This series of shorts was directly inspired by the 2019 Legacy sets:
- 70670 Monastery of Spinjitzu appears in all the episodes.
- 70679 The Ultra Dragon and 70666 The Golden Dragon appear in the second episode, Green and Gold. However, neither that episode or any of the others included Lord Garmadon, the Legacy Overlord, or any members of the Stone Army. Pythor was also absent from the episode despite appearing in 70679, but he appeared in a later episode.
- 70669 Cole's Earth Driller appears in the third episode, The Weekend Drill.
- 70667 Kai's Blade Cycle & Zane's Snowmobile appear in the fourth episode, Elemental Rider.
- 70668 Jay's Storm Fighter 70668 Jay's Storm Fighter appears in the fifth episode, Blue Lightning; despite appearing in the set, Nya does not appear in the episode.
- 70665 The Samurai Mech in the final episode, Samurai X-Treme.
- 70680 Monastery Training doesn't appear in Tales From the Monastery of Spinjitzu.
Ninjago: Masters of Spinjitzu[]
Several seasons of the series have featured Legacy vehicles and minifigure designs.
- March of the Oni used the 2019 Legacy designs for Wu and the Ninja; Cole's Earth Driller also appeared as a vehicle, and the sets updated designs for the Golden Weapons were used.
- Prime Empire-including the Prime Empire Original Shorts-used 71699 Thunder Raider and 71700 Jungle Raider as the basis for several vehicles. 71699's rendition of Cole's Earth Mech did not appear, however, nor did any elements from 40374 Golden Zane Accessory Set, 71701 Kai's Fire Dragon, or 71702 Golden Mech. None of the Ninja designs from these sets were used, nor did any of the villains included appear in animation.
- Master of the Mountain reintroduced the Destiny's Bounty using the design seen in 71705 Destiny's Bounty; however, young Lloyd Garmadon did not appear, nor did the Legacy designs for the original Ninja, Wu, or Nya. No elements from 71704 Kai Fighter appeared.
Notes[]
- This is the first wave of Ninjago sets not to be subtitled "Masters of Spinjitzu."
- These sets honor the franchise's early history, most likely to celebrate the television show's "100th episode."
- However, this doesn't make the sets completely inconsequential or irrelevant to the show. Season 10: March of the Oni features the reconstruction of the Monastery of Spinjitzu, complete with a special mural recounting the Ninja's history. Some of the mural's drawings depict moments containing aspects from these sets. These scenes were adapted into a series of shorts titled "Tales from the Monastery of Spinjitzu,” each short serving to advertise a specific "Legacy" set. Furthermore, the Ninja use their Legacy suits in Season 10.
- As a nod to the 2011 wave, Kai is the mascot of the sets, albeit without his signature scar. This is similar to how the original boxes also did not have his scar.
