Background[]
A brilliant criminal known as "the Napoleon of crime", Professor Moriarty was for a time the leader of the criminal underworld in Victorian-era London, England. This brought him into direct conflict with Sherlock Holmes, a detective who recognized Moriarty as his mental equal. Despite this, Holmes would eventually succeed in bringing down Moriarty's criminal empire but was forced to flee to mainland Europe when Moriarty himself escaped justice. Moriarity eventually caught up to Holmes and engaged him in a battle to the death, which saw Moriarty thrown over the edge of Reichenbach Falls in Switzerland. Even then his shadow would linger, as Holmes was forced to go into hiding and allow the world to think him dead in order to elude the last of Moriarty's allies.
