Rusty was a fire mech that was created by the Fire Master in the Land of Monsters with the intention of serving as a partner and a form of transportation to him.

After entering the Cave of Change to investigate people who entered and never returned, Rusty and the Fire Master were attacked by a centipede like monster, and in the ensuing battle, Rusty fell and the Fire Master was cocooned and transformed into a centipede monster over time, unbeknownst to Rusty.

After escaping from being cocooned himself, Kai stumbled upon Rusty and managed to reactivate him. After Rusty recounted the events that had transpired, Kai told Rusty he needed his strength to leave the cave, but the demoralized mech responded, saying there was nothing to fight with and to fight for. Kai reforged his blade and inspires Rusty to try and find a purpose again. Kai then left to confront the Fire Master. When the Fire Master rushed to attack him, he was intercepted by Rusty. After realizing the centipede like monster was the Fire Master, Kai offered to spare Rusty the pain of felling his former master, but the sentient mech refused and slayed the Fire Master himself. Following his death, the Fire Master's torn roningasa, robes, and necklace were collected by Kai and Rusty and placed atop a funerary pyre outside the Cave of Change where they were subsequently burned in his memory. Rusty then spoke to his fallen master, saying he was lost without him, but in the fires that honor his memory, he was now reforged.

After wandering across the Land of Monsters alongside Rusty for some time, Kai and the mech arrived along the shores of a lake where the Sea Monster resided. The monster lured Kai into its waters by creating an illusion of Wu and the other Ninja, to which the frustrated and exhausted ninja began running towards. After failing to convince Kai that something was wrong, Rusty vows to never fail a fire wielder again and unleashes an attack that frees him from the Sea Monster's tentacles. Daidan then arrives, and gives more fire to Rusty. She then prepared to attack the beast, but was then shown an illusion of her baby, alive and well again, and she too began wading into the water. Rusty however, was not fooled by the illusions, even when confronted by his former master with the offer to walk alongside him again. Undaunted, Rusty prepared to attack the Sea Monster, but was attacked by its tentacles and dragged him into its gaping jaws. After realizing there were no more options, Rusty activated his self-destruct mechanism, greatly injuring the Sea Monster and breaking its concentration, the illusions and the entrancement it held over Kai and Daidan. Kai then managed to slay the beast with one blow.

In the aftermath, Kai shares some parting words to Daidan, saying Rusty's fire rekindled inside them and gave them strength to take the next step, before departing into the sunrise to parts unknown.
