Super Mario is a licensed theme released in 2020. The theme is based on the popular Nintendo video game series of the same name. The theme makes an extensive use of play features, as almost every set centres on a different challenge that Mario has to overcome. Like Hidden Side, Super Mario integrates an online application into the experience, but here it is necessary for accessing most of the building instructions.

The LEGO Group and Nintendo partner to take legendary brick-building to a new level Designers from both companies join forces to create a new physical play experience that brings Super Mario to life in the world of LEGO bricks, launching later this year. The LEGO Group announced a partnership with Nintendo that will change the way people interact with Super Mario in the physical world and engage in LEGO experiences. Both companies share a passion for innovation and play and their collaboration has led to a reimagination of the LEGO building experience, enabling an entirely new way to play inspired by the beloved video game icon, Super Mario. Neither a video game nor a traditional LEGO brick-based set, LEGO Super Mario is a new product line that features an interactive LEGO Mario figure who collects coins in real-life game levels created with LEGO bricks. The new line will let kids experience the playful world of Super Mario like never before. Super Mario will be brought to life in the physical LEGO world and new levels of challenge and styles of play will be part of the iconic LEGO experience enjoyed by generations.

• Not including Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time or The Angry Birds Movie, which are themes based on film adaptations of video games, Super Mario is the third licensed theme based on a video game franchise. The first was Minecraft and the second was Overwatch. The LEGO Rock Band video game was a spin-off of an existing video game franchise (featuring LEGO characters but without themed sets as a primary focus), and appearances in LEGO Dimensions were in a video game with themed packs which didn't primarily focus on video game-based characters, so they are not included as licensed themes based on video game franchises.
