Lloyd visits Kryptarium Prison's new maximum security wing, which was built to contain a single prisoner: Emperor Garmadon. Repeating his previous warnings of a forthcoming doom, Garmadon advises Lloyd to release him as a means of standing against it. Lloyd refuses and departs, though Garmadon is confident his son will return. Elsewhere Cole, Zane, and P.I.X.A.L. abandon Cole's Earth Driller after becoming stuck in traffic on the way to an important ceremony. To their delight, they are presented with a new Destiny's Bounty 3.0, reconstructed from the blueprints of the original.
Back at the rebuilt Monastery of Spinjitzu, Jay is trying to work up the nerve to ask Nya to be his Yang, with Kai and Dareth providing enthusiasm but little support. The Ninja are then brought to look upon the monastery's new mural, which depicts their various struggles and victories, including: their recent battles with the Dragon Hunters and Sons of Garmadon, the conflict with Acronix and Krux, and even the erased incidents involving Nadakhan. However, Jay and Kai are surprised to note their first performance of the Tornado of Creation included, as they seem to regard it as a fairly minor, if miraculous, victory.
Suddenly, a portal appears in the sky and the Firstbourne emerges, plunging down through the air and crashing at the foot of the monastery's mountain. Wu and the Ninja quickly rush to its side, and find that she has brought a similarly ailing Faith with her. She warns of a coming darkness, which Lloyd regards as an echo of Garmadon's warning, and Wu recognizes descriptions passed down by his father, the First Spinjitzu Master, of the Oni. Recognizing the danger, the Ninja board the new Bounty-which suffers from some technical problems-in order to travel to Ninjago City and warn the populace.
Unfortunately, within the high security vault beneath Borg Tower, the Realm Crystal turns black and begins spewing forth dark smoke. Shadowy tentacles of the substance soon spread out, quickly engulfing the city and leaving many citizens in a petrified state. The Ninja are able to evacuate some of the people, but find their elemental powers useless against the foe. With no apparent alternative, the group travels to Kryptarium Prison to pick up their unlikely best chance for victory: Garmadon.
Kai and Dareth both display confusion on seeing the mural image depicting Nadakhan, reflecting the fact that the events of the Skybound season are remembered by only a handful of individuals.
