In the real world, the act of destroying the cake is represented by Finn angrily destroying Bianca's LEGO creations. Hearing them bicker, their mother gets mad at them and orders them to put their toys away. Emmet tries to stop them but is prevented by Rex, who reveals he is a embittered version of Emmet from the future. Having crashed in the asteroid field, he ended up under the clothes dryer in the real world for years, seeing his friends moving on without him. Eventually, Rex managed to escape and built a time machine to go back and assure that the Ar-mom-ageddon would happen, and the two start battling. When Emmet fights back, Rex knocks him under the dryer to ensure that he will exist. Determined to not become like Rex, Emmet tries to escape, but Rex fights him in the real world. When Rex is about to win, Lucy arrives, having rallied the others into escaping from the storage bin, and brings them back into the Lego world. Emmet and Lucy overpower Rex and destroy his time machine. Rex starts to disappear, realizing that Emmet being saved by Lucy means he won't end up becoming him, erasing his timeline, and thereupon vanishes himself.

―Emmet to Planty

The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part is the sequel to The LEGO Movie that was released on February 8th, 2019.

Background

On February 3, 2014, Jared Stern was hired to write a sequel, along with Michelle Morgan.[1] On February 21, 2014, it was announced that the sequel was scheduled to be released on May 26, 2017.[2] On March 12, 2014, Deadline reported that co-editor Chris McKay will direct the sequel with Lord and Miller as producers.[3] Warner Bros. did not invite co-producer Village Roadshow Pictures to return as a participant in the sequel[4] because the film will be produced in Vancouver, VRP will be replaced by a Canadian studio with a similar occupation. On April 10, 2014, it was reported that director Chris McKay wants more women in the sequel than men.[5] On July 28, 2014, it was reported that Chris Pratt wants to return to reprise his role of Emmet.[6] In October 2014, Warner Bros. scheduled The LEGO Batman Movie, a spin-off starring Batman for 2017, which moved The Lego Movie Sequel to 2018.[7][8] Will Arnett is set to return to voice Batman, while Chris McKay, who was earlier attached to the sequel, will direct the film which is being written by Seth Grahame-Smith and produced by Roy Lee, Dan Lin, Phil Lord, and Chris Miller.[9] On April 20, 2015, Warner Bros. scheduled The LEGO Batman Movie, for a February 10, 2017 release date[10] and The LEGO Movie 2 for a 2018 release. On October 25, 2014, it was reported that Phil Lord and Chris Miller had signed to write The LEGO Movie sequel[11] instead of Jared Stern and Michelle Morgan. The writers have implied that the sequel will take place four years after the events of the first film.[12] In February 2015, Warner Bros. announced that the title of the sequel had been changed to The LEGO Movie Sequel and that Rob Schrab replaced McKay as director since McKay went on to direct The LEGO Batman Movie.[13] According to an interview at the Santa Barbara Film Festival, the sequel will also introduce Emmet's sister. On April 20, 2015, Warner Bros. scheduled The Lego Movie Sequel for a May 18, 2018 release date.[14] On June 17, 2016, the film's release was delayed to February 8, 2019.[15] On July 8, 2016, Warner Bros. hired Raphael Bob-Waksberg to rewrite the script.[16]. On February 3, 2017, it was announced that Mike Mitchell would direct the film since Rob Schrab left due to "creative differences."[17] On September 14, 2017, it was announced that Phil Lord and Chris Miller were in the process of rewriting the script and that the movie will deal with gender issues with regards to how boys play versus how girls play.[18] On March 23, 2018, it was announced that Tiffany Haddish would be joining the cast of the film.[19]

On May 21, 2018, the name of the film was officially revealed as The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part. A teaser image with the logo was also revealed.[20]

In the five years since the events of the first film, Finn's younger sister Bianca has started taking some of his LEGO creations and other toys from the sets in their basement to play with in her own room. Metaphorically, in the LEGO universe, the Duplo invaders have turned Bricksburg into a post-apocalyptic wasteland named Apocalypseburg, and continue to invade periodically. The ordeal has made most of Apocalypseburg's citizens hardened, but Emmet remains upbeat, wanting to move into a dream home with Lucy. However, Emmet is troubled by dreams of a pending "Our-Mom-Ageddon".

General Sweet Mayhem, the leader of the Duplo army, arrives in Apocalypseburg and announced that Queen Watevra Wa'Nabi of the Systar System intends to wed Batman. Mayhem's forces kidnap Batman, Lucy, Benny, Metalbeard, and Unikitty, taking them to the Systar system. There, Batman is taken to Wa'Nabi where he eventually finds that the Queen helps satisfy his emotional validation, and proposes marriage. The others are placed in environments design to tempt them. The others each fall for these temptations, but Lucy refuses to accept hers, an endless attempt to brainwash her with catchy pop music.

Emmet converts his dream house to a spaceship to give pursuit. En route, he is saved from colliding with an asteroid field by the rugged adventurer Rex Dangervest. As they continue on to the Systar system, Emmet begins to take on several of Rex's mannerism, hoping to impress Lucy. When they arrive, they evade capture by Wa'Nabi's forces and join with Lucy. Rex helps them come up with a plan to rescue their friends which involves switching off the pop music that is brainwashing the others, while Emmet will destroy the reception cake encased in a temple to stop the wedding. As Lucy fights Mayhem to get to the music, she learns that the Systar System never meant to be antagonistic to Apocalypseburg, but instead were trying to establish peace between them, and simply failed at communicating this well. Lucy tries to stop Emmet from destroying the temple, but Emmet, facilitated by Rex's manipulations, destroys the temple anyway. This creates a hole in the LEGO universe, and Wa'Nabi warns them all the Our-Mom-Ageddon is upon them all.

Wa'Nabi and Batman finally wed, represented by Finn and Bianca reconciling with each other and agreeing to play together again. Their mother returns their toys, averting Ar-mom-ageddon. The LEGO universe is transformed into a mishmash of Bricksburg and the Systar System while Lucy keeps her natural hair color (pink and blue) and reveals that she was the original artist behind "Everything Is Awesome". Lucy then promises to accept Emmet for who he is.

The film ends with both Finn and Bianca playing happily together before The Man Upstairs shouts "Honey, where are my pants?" as the credits roll.

Spoilers end here.
