He found the Mandarin in his bedroom, where it was revealed that the Mandarin was just a English stage actor named Trevor Slattery that Killian had hired to cover his evil schemes and had bribed him with as many drugs and women that he wanted, as long as he stayed in the mansion until another video needed to be made. Tony left to confront Killian and save Pepper. Slattery was later arrested.

Background

Spoiler warning: Plot or ending details for Iron Man 3 follow.

The Mandarin was a savvy international prototypical terrorist, the archenemy of Iron Man, and leader of the terrorist group; the Ten Rings (who had captured and held Tony Stark hostage in a cave, until he built the Mark 1 and broke free). He possessed ten rings, which were the symbols and namesakes of his group. His rings didn't bestow any powers and he used guns as his main weapons.

His nationality was unknown, due to the fact he surrounded himself in secrecy, as he used many other warrior motifs and symbols and twisted them for his own use, such as Asian royal robes, a terrorist beard, samurai hair, a Captain America shield tattoo with the "A" for "anarchy" in the middle instead of star on the back of his neck, and a gun ammunition shirt.

He studied South American insurgency tactics and Sun Tzu and other ancient warfare tactics. He surrounded himself with Chinese iconography, dragons, and the symbols of warlords. He was a field officer at one point, but due to witnessing the atrocities of the world, it drove him mad. He had a hatred of America and used it to unify his group, who also had a hatred of America.

He was also an expert in global intelligence and knew how to use the media to his benefit.

During his attack on Hollywood's Chinese Theater by Jack Taggert's fiery blast, Happy Hogan was severely injured by Savin, prompting Tony to challenge the Mandarin to a fight using the news. Mandarin and Aldrich Killian then accepted the challenge by having Killian's Extremis enhanced henchman Eric Savin destroying Tony's mansion. He then taught the world, mostly America, "lessons" by attacking the country with his Extremis enhanced soldiers. At one point, he had his soldiers steal the Iron Patriot armour, so Savin could board Air Force One and kidnap President Ellis, which he was successful with, despite Iron Man's best efforts to stop him. The Mandarin then released another video showing the President in the armour hanging above an oil tanker, threatening to blow up the tank on Christmas Day.

Tony and Rhodey decided to infiltrate the Mandarin's Miami mansion with Tony calling in his Iron Legion to battle Mandarin's Extremis soldiers. When Rhodey went to rescue the President, Tony went to confront the Mandarin.
