Lloyd attempts to puzzle through his visions in hopes of locating Lord Ras and the Wolf Clan but has no success. He and Nya discuss the matter and are briefly disrupted by Wyldfyre in the midst of her latest training session. Meanwhile, Arin and Sora are interrupted in the midst of an infiltration of the Administration by a number of agents, managing to escape narrowly escape using a smoke bomb. Making their way out, they reunite with Riyu and board the car they obtained from Jordana.
As they flee, Arin and Sora bemoan their failure to learn anything about Arin's missing parents. However, they then spot a large dragon making a crash-landing in the Realm of Madness and recognize the Dragon Matriarch. To their horror, they discover that the Matriarch is bereft of her horns. Briefly, they contemplate contacting the other Ninja but decide to reach out to Riyu's friends in the area instead.
Elsewhere, at Shadow Dojo, Nokt and Cinder are training in Shatterspin, though Ras continues to restrain Nokt with his pain-inducing control device. As the group trains for a mysterious competition with other Elemental Masters, the Dragon Matriarch is being attended to by the Craglings. Lloyd, Nya, and Wyldfyre then arrive on Heatwave and Zanth, and the Matriarch then releases a scrap of paper for Lloyd. The Matriarch then communicates with Lloyd briefly before dying, passing along a warning about the Source Dragons.
The group then discover an infant dragon-the Matriarch's child-hidden on the mother's body. They resolve to return the baby to its tribe, and Riyu makes use of his senses to locate the others of his kind. As dragons and Ninja follow Riyu's lead, they are unknowingly followed by an Imperium hovercraft. It proves to be one of several, carrying Rapton and several Imperium Claw Hunters in an attack. Rapton claims that he and his comrades are now "Freebooters", a group of pirates hunting dragons for their own purposes rather than for their former home in Imperium.
Lloyd is quick to accuse Rapton of killing the Matriarch, but Rapton denies any such role and claims to only be after the baby. However, the Mountain Dragons then arrive to defend their friends and the Matriarch's child, and Rapton's force retreats. The Mountain Dragons prove to now be residents of the World Forest, and with the matriarch's child now safe with its tribe, the Ninja vow to learn who killed the Matriarch. Back at the Monastery of Spinjitzu, the Ninja try to reason through things when they are approached by a dragon claiming to be the Source Dragon of Motion.
After demonstrating the veracity of her identity, the Source Dragon reveals that other Arch Dragons have recently perished and been robbed of their dragon crowns. All three were under the Dragon of Motion and the Source Dragon of Life, and the Source Dragon of Motion expresses fear that the Source Dragons will be next to be targeted. She further reveals that one of the Source Dragons has already perished, and that if the rest were to perish, it might bring about the end of existence itself. The Dragon of Motion explains that she is acting on her own and appeals to the Ninja for help.
Once the Source Dragon sees the paper the Matriarch gave Lloyd, she recognizes it as a map to the City of Temples, home of the Tournament of the Sources. She thus charges the Ninja with entering the tournament and trying to identify the enemy responsible for the attacks on the dragons.
